PROJECT OVERVIEW

Heat Pumps

The Heat Pump Project is here to help navigate the journey to efficient, high-quality heat pump installations.

This page is for homeowners, installers, and anyone curious about how heat pumps can transform home heating efficiency and make a positive impact on the environment.

Why does this project matter?

Heating the UK’s 28 million homes accounts for almost 20% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. Air Source Heat Pumps can reduce home heating emissions by up to 80% and are suitable for many types of home.

For climate-conscious homeowners who are able to make energy upgrades, replacing a fossil fuelled boiler with an air source heat pump is one of the most effective personal actions they can take. However, navigating the process to ensure the right approach for your home can be challenging.

Our Heat Pump project is focused on helping people in Bath and North East Somerset to get quality, effective heat pump installations, tailored to their needs.

Project approach

The Heat Pump Project is funded and supported by the West of England Combined Authority. It provides three key activities:

  • Our expert assessors are trained to ‘Heat Geek Mastery’ level, to provide a detailed heat pump survey for your house.

    What the survey includes:

    • A heat loss assessment based on your energy bills

    • Guidance on the ideal heat pump size and placement

    • Advice on what other work might be needed, like further insulation or larger radiators.

These assessments empower you to confidently review quotes from installers. Available at a discounted price of £126 (usually £420).

  • We urgently need more skilled heat pump installers, but becoming one can seem daunting. Fortunately there is great training available. The ‘Heat Geek Mastery course teaches the skills to do a full heat pump design that will achieve a high efficiency and low running costs.

Our grant funding enables us to fund those wishing to become suppliers to take the Heat Geek Mastery qualification. We have a limited number of slots available, if you are interested in this funding, please see the information and apply below.

    How you can help:

    • Share your experience at events or speak to people who are considering a heat pump

    • Host a visit to show others your heat pump in action (as part of NESTA’s ‘Visit a Heat Pump’ scheme).

If you’re interested, contact us at home.energy@bwce.coop, and we’ll find a way for you to participate that works for you.
